Community Workday (X-days) “Who is my neighbor?” June 26, 2016

SCRIPTURE:

Jeremiah 29:4-7; 1 John 3:17-18; Matthew 5:14-16

Our Scripture readings come from the prophet Jeremiah, the first letter of John, and Matthew’s gospel. Listen for God’s word.

4Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. 7But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
From the first letter of John:
17How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help? 18Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.

From the gospel of Matthew:

And Jesus said…
14‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

From Faith Alliance:

X Days mission: “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

The month of June is X Days month! X Days is a Faith Alliance community service project day in which some of our partner churches’ members go out into the world to be the “eX-ternal” church. Throughout the weeks to come, keep your eyes and ears open for God sightings. You just may see a group of volunteers out in the community serving our neighbors in Jesus name.

What is the purpose of this X Days event?

X Days unifies area churches under one common mission in Jesus Christ, displaying to the community what His church can do together, clearly revealing that the “church” is not a building–it is His people at work to make His name famous and power revealed. Jesus wants us to be His disciples and to spread God’s love! To follow in Jesus’ footsteps we need to do as He did, to be among others, building relationships with them as living reflections of His redemptive love.

Dozens of projects will be done at sites such as: Family Promise of Butler County Day Center, several Butler County foster homes and nursing homes, One Way Farm, Serve City, Reach Out Lakota, Hope’s Closet, Heritage Elementary and 5 West Chester Fire Houses.
