“How is the Truth to be Known?” Scripture (John 18:33-38) February 12, 2017

Call to Worship:

L:         Sing praises to God, O you saints, and give thanks to God’s holy name!

P:         We exalt you, O God, for you have restored us to life!

L:         We may cry through the night, but your joy comes with the morning.

P:         You hear us, O God, and you are gracious in our distress.

L:         You turn our mourning in dancing!

P:          Our souls cannot be silent, we give thanks to God our Savior!

 Scripture (John 18:33-38)

Our reading comes from the good news according to John.

33Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”

34Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?”

35Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?”

36Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”

37Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”

38Pilate asked him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no case against him.

Here ends our reading. May God bless our understanding.

Bring Chili, or  just come and enjoy a free meal. Entries will be anonymous.

chili-cookoffHere are some typical categories on how chili is judged:

  • Color — Does the chili look appetizing? Does it look bright and colorful or dull and bland?
  • Aroma — Does it smell good? Does the aroma make you want to dig in?
  • Consistency — How is the meat-to-sauce ratio? It shouldn’t be runny, mushy or overly thick.
  • Taste — How is the flavor? Do the ingredients blend well, or is one too overpowering? Does the first bite make you want another one?
  • Aftertaste — Once you swallow, is there a spicy taste (“bite”) that stays on your tongue? Is it pleasant?

You do not have to be a member of this church, faith, or any faith to attend.  All are welcome.  It is a free event.

ABOUT THE RESTORE

The purpose of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati’s ReStores is to help provide funding for our organization’s mission of helping to alleviate poverty housing in our area.  The stores do this by selling donated new and used appliances, furniture, cabinets, building products and household items to the general public.  While it is not the only source of funding for the organization, the profit from these stores has allowed us to help serve more families in the Greater Cincinnati area.

The success of the ReStores has been made possible by the generous donations of individuals and companies throughout our area.  Without their continued support and generosity, our stores would not have been able to help those in need to the extent that they have.  By providing free pick up service, the stores are also an outlet for our donors to be able to recycle and repurpose items that may have otherwise gone to our local landfills.  Since these items are donated to us, we are able to provide our donors with a charitable gift receipt.

The ReStores have become an important part in Habitat’s mission to build homes, communities…and hope.

Typical Questions and Answers:

Is there any charge for this event?

Absolutely not! Whether you’re an animal agency or animal lover, it’s free of charge and open to all the public. It’s our gift to the community.

Do you have a lot of adoption agencies attend?

Yes.  Please know that we try to get representatives from different breeds as well as the SPCA. You may have to fill out an application at this event in order to be approved for adopting your new family member.

Do you advertise the event?

Yes. We advertise through Facebook promotions, Craigslist, Other Social Media and we also ask that our members put up flyers.

I’d like to participate. What are my options?

If you’re an animal agency that would like to set up a booth to promote your organization, please fill out the contact form information at the top of this post. If you’re an animal lover, just come to the event with your animal friend or a picture.

What is the Animal Blessing service?

It’s an outdoor celebration located on Compass Christian Church’s expansive lawn area with representative animal agencies of the community, and refreshments. The highlight of the service is when people bring their animals forward to be blessed, receiving a special “blessing tag.” If your pet doesn’t travel well bring a picture of your pet and we’ll bless it.

Why are animals blessed?

Because God created them and declared them “good” (Genesis 1:25), and because for many people their pets mediate unconditional love and are a blessing to those who love and care for them. This service recognizes and celebrates this reality.

What kinds of animals are welcome?

All kinds! Dogs, cats, birds, pygmy goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ducks, parrots, snakes, turtles, iguanas and even squirrels! You and your beloved pet, of whatever persuasion, would be warmly welcomed! For your pet’s safety, we advise leashes for dogs and any other species must be caged at all times.

What if I have other questions?

Please email compasscorg@gmail.com and we will answer your question.
