“Headlines and Time Signs” (Luke 12:49-56) Sunday Dec 3, 2017

Advent Candle Lighting:

L:         Remember that you were at one time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel.

P:         We were strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

L:         Remember also that Isaiah said, “The root of Jesse shall come, the one who rises to rule the Gentiles; in him the Gentiles shall hope.” (Light 1st purple candle)

P:         When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy.

L:         Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people!

P:         Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise him!

L:         Having lit the candle of hope, let us sing “Seek the Child.”

Scripture (Luke 12:49-56)

Our reading comes from the good news according to Luke.

             Jesus said to the disciples,

49“I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!
50I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed!
51Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!
52From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three;
53they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
54He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, ‘It is going to rain’; and so it happens.
55And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat’; and it happens.
56You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

Here ends our reading. May God bless our  understanding.
